is a post-graduate institute and think-tank. The goal of the CI is to encourage pluralistic discourse in the countries of the South Caucasus by contributing to the development of political science and news media in the region.

«KYZYL-SHAFAG AND KERKENJ: AN EXCHANGE OF VILLAGES DURING THE CONFLICT OVER NAGORNO-KARABAKH»

The Caucasus Institute presented a volume by Sevil Huseynova, Arsen Hakobyan and Sergey Rumyantsev «Kyzyl-Shafag and Kerkenj: an Exchange of Villages During the Conflict Over Nagorno-Karabakh», edited by Viktor Voronkov, Alexander Iskandaryan and Nino Lejava.The book was presented by one of its authors, Arsen Hakobyan, and reviewed by ethnologist Hranush Kharatyan. The presentation followed by a discussion. Participants were scholars, students, public activists, journalists, diplomats, representatives of international organizations and NGOs.
The presentation was jointly organized by the South Caucasus Bureau of the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Caucasus Institute.

Presentation of CI Research Paper
«Pragmatic Policies vs. Historical Limitations: Analyzing Armenian-Turkish Relations»

On February 9, 2010 at 4 p.m. the Caucasus Institute will hold a Research Paper presentation at the address Yeznik Koghbatsi 39, Yerevan.

The first issue of the CI Research Paper series, Pragmatic Policies vs. Historical Limitations: Analyzing Armenian-Turkish Relations, by CI Director Alexander Iskandaryan and Head of Political Studies Department Sergey Minasyan, analyses the factors that impact Armenian-Turkish relations and the main parameters and trends of the ongoing rapprochement.

Ruben Safrastyan, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the National Academy of Science of Armenia, will present and review the research paper. His presentation will be followed by a discussion of current trends in Armenian-Turkish relations and prospects for regional political developments.

WORKSHOP ON NEW MEDIA AND JOURNALISM
December 9‐11, 2009, Caucasus Institute



Trainer: Martijn de Waal, researcher and trainer at Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam; participant of New Media, Public Sphere and Urban Culture research project, Department of Practical Philosophy at the University of Groningen
Goal of the workshop: to share with CI students and staff knowledge and visions on developments in New Media and Journalism.
The workshop will address three important themes.
• Distribution and context of journalistic ‘content’ in the digital world /Journalism in a new media ‘ecology’
• Audience: Rethinking the relation between journalists and their audiences
• Form: New media and new journalistic formats

The workshops will focus on conceptual issues. It is the goal to inspire students with many examples and international best practices on new media journalism and to provoke them into a new way of thinking about their profession, its role in society and their relation to the audience.

THE EU-RUSSIA-POSTSOVIET SPACE TRIANGLE AND THE EASTERN PARTNERSHIP PROGRAMME
Roundtable, October 9, 2009, Caucasus Institute


The Caucasus Institute organized a roundtable with Dr. Arkady Moshes, Programme Director of Russia in the Regional and Global Context Research Programme at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. He spoke about THE EU-RUSSIA-POSTSOVIET SPACE TRIANGLE AND THE EASTERN PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM. His presentation was followed by a discussion with the participation of policy experts, journalists, civil society activists, representatives of international organizations and diplomatic bodies.
The roundtable is part of a series of expert discussions and public debates organized by the CI in the framework of a project supported by the South Caucasus Bureau of the Heinrich Böll Foundation and aimed at focusing the public discourse in Armenia at crucial issues of regional development.


EASTERN PARTNERSHIP AND THE PROSPECTS FOR DEMOCRACY BUILDING IN THE SOUTH CAUCASUS
International Conference



On June 26, 2009 in Tigran Mets Hall of Armenia Marriott Hotel, the Caucasus Institute and the South Caucasus Bureau of the Heinrich Böll Foundation held an international conference on “Eastern Partnership and the Prospects for Democracy Building in the South Caucasus.” The presenters were prominent experts and representatives of the civil society from Armenia and Georgia, as well as the Director of the Henrich Böll Foundation Iris Kempe and the Director of the Research Center of the Slovak Foreign Policy Association Alexander Duleba. Scholars, social society activists, journalists, representatives of international organizations and diplomatic missions attended the conference.
During the conference, the Caucasus Institute presented the joint CI-TESEV Armenian-Turkish analytical report “Turkey-Armenia Dialogue Series: Breaking the Vicious Circle” co-authored by Aybars Görgülü and Sabiha Senyucel Gundogar from TESEV and Alexander Iskandaryan and Sergey Minasyan from the Caucasus Institute.

CAUCASUS 2008
International Conference



On April 28-29, 2009 the Caucasus Institute held the Caucasus-2008 International Conference. Scholars, journalists and public activists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Russia and the U.S. summed up the year 2008 in the Caucasus. The conference had over 100 participants: experts, journalists, diplomats, representatives of civil society and international organizations.

The CI presented its last Yearbook, “Caucasus 2007”, to participants of the conference.

The conference was held in the framework of the project on Building Capacity for Policy Debate in Armenia supported by the EU, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the Heinrich Böll Foundation.
